End Citizens United: Opposing Judgement of Supreme Court & Supporting Pro-Reform Candidates
End Citizens United is an active group classified as a political action committee formed in an effort to stop the effects of a court decision that passed allowing special interest groups and affluent individuals to spend untold amounts of money on U.S. elections. The Supreme Court ruled in the decision of Citizens United v F.E.C. to deregulate spending limits on political candidates and allows limitless untraceable contributions which can lead to the “buying” of elections.

The mission of the group is to gain momentum until they can see the end of Citizens United and also forward progress in the effort to elect pro-reform candidates. Formed in 2015 and led by President Tiffany Muller, End Citizens United seeks to vastly thin the power struggle caused by big money in government. Funding for the group comes from grassroots donations. The group started out with $2 million earned from countless small donations. The first election cycle in which End Citizens United was active saw $25 million in funding as they backed Hillary Clinton in 2016. Other candidates that End Citizens United has backed include Elizabeth Warren, Zephyr Teachout, Russ Feingold, Beto O’Rourke, and John Ossoff with the goal to elect “campaign-finance reform champions” to various positions. Additionally, this organization aided in the elections of senators Maggie Hassan and Catherine Cortez Masto in 2016. Currently the group has seen an estimated $7.5 million in grassroots donations and plans to seek donations of approximately $35 million for 2018 elections.
Thus far, End Citizens United has remained true to their stated goals and backed exclusively pro-reform candidates for election. This means that they have supported only Democratic candidates at this time; however, the organization is quick to point out that they are simply backing whatever candidate is eager to bring about change. Although they have suffered a bit of criticism for solely backing Democratic candidates, End Citizens United is quick to point out that those candidates were the ones who aligned their goals with change in the financial aspects. Despite the findings that several Republican and Independent leaders agree that unregulated political spending has hit uncontrollable levels, they are not taking swift action to eliminate this trend at the current time. The organization is adamant that they would willingly support a Republican or Independent candidate if the desire for reform was a priority for that candidate.
