Eric Lefkofsky: A Successful Entrepreneur Who is at the Forefront of the Fight Against Cancer

Genetic Lung Cancer for Lung Cancer

Scientists have proved that genetic and environmental risk factors facilitate the development of lung cancer. Tobacco smoking is one of renowned factors cause lung cancer. Yafaang Li led a Dartmouth Research team to show the interaction between smoke and genes. Three novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and DNA variations were identified. SNPs and DNAs were used to describe the body`s susceptibility to developing cancer. SPNs act as biomarkers for lung cancer intervention and screening.

OncoArray Consortium provided the phenotype and genotype data that was used in the analysis. Most of the genome-wide interaction studies are used for the analysis of the association of the main effect. The study by Dartmouth Research is largest analysis, regarding SNP-smoke interaction, for lung cancer. The group implemented a two-step technique to reduce the loss of power due to the interaction of the genes and the environment.

The three novel SNPs demonstrate how smoking behavior can increase the risk of lung cancer. Being used as biomarkers, the SNPs can improve the precision of categorizing the lung cancer risks. By analyzing an individual`s smoking behavior, the group came up with a method of developing a treatment plan and individualized prognosis.
The study, by Dartmouth Research team, was based on a Caucasian population. This limits its application to other communities because of the difference in their genetic material. However, the group hopes to improve the research by conducting a similar study on other populations. The team believes it can better its research by gathering more data regarding various gene-smoke interactions.

About Eric Lefkofsky

Born on the 2nd of September, 1969, Eric Lefkofsky is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. He is the CEO and co-founder of Tempus. The organization developed an operating system to fight cancer. Eric is also the Chairman and co-founder of Groupon. The firm deals with e-commerce marketing. Other organizations that Lefkofsky has helped establish include Echo Global Logistics (ECHO), Mediaocean, Uptake, Lightbank and Innerworkings (INWK).

Eric Lefkofsky left his CEO position at Groupon to work at Tempus. He hoped to build an infrastructure that would modernize the treatment of cancer. The organization helps healthcare professionals, including cancer specialists, to make personalized, data-driven and real-time treatment decisions. The organization achieves the objective by using molecular therapies to analyze the genetic code.

Eric Lefkofsky is an active philanthropist. He utilizes Lefkofsky Family Foundation to support cancer treatment projects. In 2015, he funded a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Project at Northwestern University. In the same year, Eric Lefkofsky helped fund a research, pertaining gastric cancer immunotherapy, that was conducted at Stanford University.
